 [单选题]Travel across Africa

For six hours we shot through the barren landscape of the Karoo desert in South Africa. Just rocks and sand and baking sun. Knowing our journey was ending.Daniel and I just wanted to remember all we had seen and done. He used a camera. I used words. I had already finished three notebooks and was into the fourth,a beautiful leather notebook I’d bought in a market in Mozambique.

Southern Africa was full of stories and visions. We were almost drunk on sensations, the roaring of the water at Victoria Falls, the impossible silence of the Okavango Delta in Botswana.

And then the other things:dogs in the streets, whole families in Soweto living in one room,a kilometre from clean water.

As we drove towards the setting sun,a quietness fell over us. The road was empty—we hadn’t seen another car for hours. And as I drove, something caught my eye, something moving close enough to touch them, to smell their hot breath. I didn’t know how long they had been there next to us.

I shouted to Dan:"Look!"But he was in a deep sleep, his camera lying useless by his feet. They raced the car for a few seconds, then disappeared far behind us,a memory of heroic forms in the red landscape.

When Daniel woke up an hour later I told him what had happened.

  “Wild horses?”he said.“Why didn’t you wake me up,Sophia?”

"I tried. But they were gone after a few seconds."

"Are you sure you didn’t dream it?"

“You were the one who was sleeping!”

“Typical”,he said. "The best photos are the ones we never take."

We checked into a dusty hotel and slept the sleep of the dead.

Daniel and Sophia had a good sleep in the hotel.()。

  [单选题]The Cold Places

The Arctic is a polar region. It surrounds(环绕)the North Pole.

Like Antarctica(南极洲),the Arctic is a land of ice and snow. Antarctica holds the record for a low temperature reading—125 degrees Fahrenheit (华氏温标)below zero. Readings of 85 degrees below zero are common in both the Arctic and Antarctica. Winter temperatures average 30 degrees below zero in the Arctic. At the South Pole the winter average is about 73 degrees below zero.

One thing alone makes it almost impossible for men to live in Antarctica and in parts of the Arctic. This one thing is the low temperature—the killing chill of the far North and the polar South.

To survive, men must wear the warmest possible clothing. They must build windproof shelters. They must keep heaters going at all times. Not even for a moment can they be unprotected against the below-zero temperatures.

Men have a way of providing for themselves. Polar explorers wrap themselves in warm coats and furs. The cold makes life difficult. But the explorers can stay alive.

What about animals? Can they survive? Do we find plants? Do we find life in the Arctic and in Antarctica? Yes,we do. There is life in the oceans. There is life on land.

Antarctica, as we have seen, is a cold place indeed. But this has not always been the case. Expedition(探险考察)scientists have discovered that Antarctica has not always been a frozen continent. At one time the weather in Antarctica may have been much like our own.

Explorers have discovered coal in Antarctica. This leads them to believe that Antarctica at one time was a land of swamps(沼泽)and forests. Heat and moisture must have kept the trees in the forests alive.

At one time, the weather in Antarctica was so warm and damp that trees grew there().

  [单选题]Children´s Self-Control

Teaching your child self-control will help him get along with others, make good choices and stay safe. Teaching self-control starts early and truly and never stops. The thoughtful parent knows that each child is an individual with a will of its own. Respect for a child"s need will be balanced with respect for the need of others. Teaching your child self-control involves helping him to:think before acting; control impulse; weigh consequences; make safe and acceptable choices.

Knowing what to expect from your child at each stage of growth will provide guideposts as your child grows. Lessons in self-control need to be age-appropriate. Parents also need to agree on clear limits and boundaries as well as reasonable consequences at each stage of development.

It is important to be a model of self-control for your child. Controlling the urge to yell when in a frustrating situation will show your child it can be done. Considering consequences by thinking aloud will give your child a living example of thinking before acting. Your everyday display of kindness, patience and thoughtful regard will go farther than anything else!

Babies and toddlers experience frustration often as they do not have the means to communicate or acquire what they need and want. Distracting the very young children can work sometimes.

As preschoolers get older, say age two or beyond, they may need to cool down. Placing them on a chair for a minute or two may stop out-of-control behavior. As soon as the child settles,he should be allowed to move from the time-out area. This can be an effective way of teaching early self-control.

If you find you are not able to handle your young child"s frustration, it is important to get help from a counselor. He will help you to find ways to deal with your own feelings of frustration.

What does the third paragraph mean? ()。

ADon't let your child know the bad consequence before.

BExample is much better than command.

CYelling is not a good way to teach your child.

DChildren prefer a living example to others.
